The Architect wanted to connect the existing river-edge trail with a link beneath the overhang of the new building, but did not want to cantilever a structure off the building. A continuation of the existing gravel track was achieved by craning-in 490t of sandstone boulders in 4t skiploads to fill the river edge to allow the gravel path to be constructed on top. The minimal footprint available to unload materials and the requirement to programme works around high tides, together with risk management made this a challenging project.
